Edith Cabrera interview
Edith Cabrera is an activist and human rights defender who, within her group #24F militates in Mexico for the freedom of Australian journalist Julian Assange.
The founder of Wikileaks, at the moment remains in the maximum security prison in Belmarsh / London, accused of espionage for exposing crimes and corruption of the governments that today judge him with total impunity.
With tortuous anxiety, the Judge's decision regarding his Extradition to the United States is expected on January 4, as well as a possible pardon at the hands of the current President Donald Trump.
- How long have you been in the fight since activism for Julian Assange
- I started on April 11, 2019, the day that Julian Assange was kidnapped from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London and put in a maximum security prison, and I say kidnapped because what the current president of Ecuador Lenín Moreno did was a total violation of the Ecuadorian constitution, the International Human Rights Convention and the international principle of Non-Refoulement.
That morning some of us met outside the Ecuadorian Embassy in Mexico City, after a short time I was alone. I knew that the important thing was to spread and inform, I decided to continue. I learned that to do activism you don't need money, you just need to make tarps, banners, flyers and have time; go out to schools, look for spaces, knock on doors in the media. The important thing is to have decision, perseverance and discipline.
Then people start joining, the media get closer, they get to know you and you are fulfilling your objective; mine is to help spread Assange's cause nationally.
- How do you experience everything related to this case in Mexico?
-There is indignation and concern, a sector of the population knows the case well, unfortunately in my country people do not have the habit of reading and that brings great misinformation.
In the month of January of this year, our President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, at a press conference, spoke in favor of Julian, which was very good and applauded, it is impossible for him to make an official statement since one of the foreign policy principles of Mexico is No Intervention.
Senator Ricardo Fuentes also gave his support to Julian Assange as well as Dr Manuel Gonzáles, Secretary for Social Human Rights of Morena. They both joined us on a couple of our protests
In 2010 Assange had an approach to our people, he chose the newspaper "La Jornada" for the dissemination of cables from the North American State Department about our country,
Since then "La Jornada" has been constantly informing us about Julian. The journal had correspondents covering the trial in London, there are some other journals that also report, but most are silent. Here as in the rest of the world the traditional media help to create the foreign policy of imperialism.
Our group #24F we have been holding informational protests and other events in universities, journalism schools, pedestrian areas, parks, but due to the restrictions by Covid 19 we only continue with the protests.
- What's the latest news from Belmarsh Prison in London?
-It is not encouraging, there is an outbreak of Covid 19 in the area where he is being held, due to this, he did not appear in a video conference at the last administrative hearings.
The journalist Stefanía Maurizi recently reported that Julian is freezing, at night the temperature in the cell that contains him is 0 degrees. She contacted the British Minister of Justice, who coldly replied that their priority is to limit the spread of the virus and save lives, that all prisoners can exercise and request additional blankets.
Julian suffers from chronic lung disease, according to doctors, constant exposure to cold causes the mechanisms to generate heat to fail, first the brain functions begin to fail and then the respiratory functions, triggering a possible Pneumonia.
The UK continues to flagrantly violate the International Convention against Torture, International Law and Julian's Basic Human Rights. he is subjected to the same cruel and inhumane treatment as the ones he exposed. We are witnessing a slow and gradual murder, his health is very vulnerable. Julian could die in prison, we cannot allow this to happen.

--Do you think the Biden government can change the course of this story or make the situation worse?
-The Department of Justice of the United States will continue with the case, if Biden arrives at the White House it will exert greater pressure against Julian. Being the Vice President in 2010 he called Julian a High Tech Terrorist.
Recall that it was the Obama administration that from that same year asked its allies around the world to find something against Julián to catch him, Obama's attack was not frontal, he weakened Assange's image, with the help of the mass media he demonized him, making public opinion turn its back on Julian, this is well known as "lawfare"
The empire has problems with anyone who questions its domination and now they have him and they don't want to let him go.
- However, it was Obama who forgave Manning and it was during the Donald Trump administration that Julian was snatched from the Embassy and put in prison in a totally illegal way by the government of England. It is really the president of the United States who manages the situation and the wars in the world and all these conspiracies that Wikileaks was in charge of unmasking, it is really the government or what is behind it, who handles not only all this torture to which Is Julian Assange subjected in the name of shameful justice, if not precisely, to the whole world?
- Yes, Obama forgave Manning, then they arrested her again, they released her again, it is obvious that they are not going against Manning and they are not really going against whistleblowers, although they are harassing them; They are going to censor the information that organizations like Wikileaks give us, that is their original idea and that continues to be the plan: Censorship Censorship and keep the majority of the population in a defenseless state.
I think it is not the President, whether it is Trump, Biden, Obama ... they are like somebody else's puppets. There are powers far above and my idea is that it is not so much the USA, the planning mind has always been and continues to be England, everything comes from there. The United States is like its strong arm. Presidents are irrelevant they use them as they use all presidents around the world. They put on and take off according to their convenience.
Well, I think we know very little, that there are too many hidden secrets and some of those secrets is who really handles those threads of power.

Nils Melzer, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture spoke at the Don't Extradite Assange Ralley in London and said that Julian Assange "has been tortured & continues to be tortured"
- Is there anyone who contrasts this dark power in the world, is there an international organization that can rise up against this and also obtain some result?
- As far as I know there is no one who can counter this power. There are several families and one of them is supporting Hillary, the CIA, they are behind them, they are the financial bankers who created all this Neo-liberal Capitalist catastrophe and the other part are very rich ancestral families who want to retake power they are the ones behind the nationalist project, they would be supporting Trump and Jinping and Putin for saying ... I believe that in the end it does not matter which side it is because they all want power and control.
Unfortunately there is nothing, nor do I think there is, many of the organizations are financed by them, so everything is a game that sinks us as society and right now everything is getting more and more tense and Julian Assange is a scapegoat, someone has to pay, someone has to set the example.
He had a great conviction in what he was doing, he was like a rebellious boy for them and they are punishing him. We have to wake up and be united and demand and not allow them to take away the freedoms that we may not have really have but we do have few, as with all this managed pandemic to financially ruin us. The only ones who can do something are us, all of us, united, but we allow them to divide us, to distract us and they continue to win.

World-wide journalists condemn court action against Julian Assange
- What is defined on January 4?
- On January 4, the Judge will give her verdict, appeals will come and perhaps a trial in the United States, the reality is very unfortunate because the United Kingdom does not need to wait for any sentence, they have already managed to silence Julian.
The United Kingdom and the United States have sought Julian's physical and mental decline, his health is collapsing.
All of this is revenge for showing us the truth of how they rule, manipulate, lie, steal and kill us. Julian opened the eyes of many people, he is the most dangerous man for the big powers that do so much damage in our world. They are not going to stop if we don't make them stop, public opinion is the only one that can make the rulers do the right thing.
It is also said that Biden would be removed from office if he became president, Kamala Harris would assume, therefore Hillary Clinton would be really in charge, Hillary spoke of "drone" Julian.
- What awaits Julian in the United States if he is extradited?
- Upon being accused of espionage, Julian would be imprisoned in the Alexandria detention center under SAM (Special Administrative Measures) in almost total isolation 22 to 23 hours a day in a cell of 15 square meters, he will not have contact with another prisoner, he will eat inside his cell. With little sunlight, no fresh air, no reading material, no access to therapeutic programs. He will not have contact with relatives, he will have the right to a monthly call of 15 to 30 minutes, all calls are monitored, he can only speak to his lawyers; they will put them in different cells with grids in between that will make it impossible to have eye contact or pass documents.
Neither Julian nor his lawyers will be able to make public statements. The United States government will be the only one to tell its version. If the lawyers violate these conditions they would suffer a criminal process, all this is while awaiting a trial and then he will be serving a sentence in the maximum security prison ADX in Colorado
This prison was designed so that once the inmates enter, they will not see the light again, it was described as hell. Julian will be chained at the hands and waist.
He will not have a fair trial in the United States, the eastern district of Virginia, where he will be judged the jury is made up of a community where the inhabitants work for federal service.
It is outrageous that a chief editor is treated as a terrorist, as a criminal for carrying out his work and that real war criminals are not prosecuted by a justice system that protects them but mercilessly punishes those who confront them.
- We have realized and even more throughout this case, that the laws are either to protect the real criminals or are manipulated by them, you have a vision of what things would have to change so that justice could exist in the world or do we already have to give up?
- No, never give up our fight is to improve life. We must have freedom of thought, let's read and feel, first let's turn off the television, the big powers use disinformation as a weapon against us. Information is power. The free flow of information helps us to keep an eye on our governments. Secrets, censorship and fear are tools of tyranny because an informed and conscientious people can make their power disappear. We have to question everything, must have clarity and organization, they are organized, we must think with the heart and humanize ourselves.
We must assume our responsibility for the future of our planet, create an ethical and moral humanity with love for truth and justice; reject violence and the false reality that they have built, we must speak out against practices that devastate human rights.
